A 1-year-old baby girl died after being left in the care of an 8-year-old boy while the baby's mother Katerra Lewis and a friend went to a nightclub, according to authorities.
At about 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 11, Birmingham Police Department officers were called and discovered Kelcia Lewis unresponsive in her crib, officials say.
"It is believed while the mother and friend were at the club, the 8-year-old viciously attacked the 1-year-old because [she] would not stop crying," according to a press release.
Kelcia died from severe head trauma and internal organ damage.
The 8-year-old, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, was charged with murder. He is currently in the custody of the state's Department of Human Resources.
The baby's mother Katerra was charged with manslaughter. She posted a $15,000 bond and was released from Jefferson County Jail.
